Hearts pounding, sneakers squeaking, and the crowd roaring the Mayor Basketball cup has set the court ablaze. At Hi 5 Youth foundation we believe that every child deserves a shot at success. This weekend the Mayor Basketball Cup 2026, made this belief come to life. This tournament was organized by Hi 5 Youth Foundation in association with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on February 27th & 28th, 2026 at Motilal Nagar BMC School, Goregaon West.
The two-day tournament served as a prestigious inter-school platform for Under-14 boys’ and girls’ teams from across Mumbai to compete, learn, and showcase their basketball talent.
The competition was conducted in a league-cum-knockout format, where teams competed in group stage matches, followed by quarterfinals, semi-finals, and finals. All matches were played in a standard 5 vs 5 full-court format, strictly in accordance with the latest Basketball Federation of India (BFI) rules, ensuring professional standards of play and officiating. Along with participating schools, five Hi 5 teams also took part in the tournament, gaining valuable competitive exposure.
The tournament gained additional prestige with the presence of several BMC officials, who attended to show their supports for local youth sports and community development.

The selection of Motilal Nagar BMC School as the venue for the Mayor Basketball Cup was a strategic decision, as it is the only BMC school equipped with two side-by-side basketball courts. The court facilities meet international standards, making the venue well-suited for hosting large-scale basketball tournaments.
As part of the event preparation, Hi 5 ensured the availability of quality basketball equipment, court facilities, hydration stations, and basic amenities to provide a safe and well-managed playing experience for participants and attendees. Students from nearby BMC schools also attended as spectators, offering them an opportunity to observe competitive basketball and gain exposure to the values of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship.

Future Outlook
In the coming years, the Mayor Basketball Cup aims to increase participation from private schools across different education boards and introduce additional age categories to expand student participation.
Hi 5 Youth Foundation will also work towards training more BMC school children under its basketball development program, enabling greater representation of municipal school teams in the tournament.
These efforts aim to strengthen the tournament and develop the Mayor Basketball Cup into a prominent inter-school basketball competition in Mumbai.
Messages:
Dr. Prachi Jambhekar
Deputy Commissioner (Education)
“I thank the Hi 5 Youth Foundation for organizing this Mayor Basketball Cup. We are celebrating the ten years of partnership with Hi 5 and BMC and this is to celebrate 10 years. As today we could see that we are at the podium position, so we are on the right track and I believe this partnership will continue. This is just one single step, the first step to the ten thousand goal. We hope to continue this next year with more teams and of course more categories also. I always think that many private schools organize this kind of inter-school competitions, but I’m not sure if BMC has ever organized this kind of cup. So this was the first year and we thought that our players are now capable of competing with the private schools where our schools are also very well-equipped, not just equipment but the best coaches.”
Mr. Allwyn D’Souza
Head Coach of St. Anthony’s Girls High School, Chembur
“To talk about this tournament, the Mayor’s Basketball Cup, it’s one of the best organized tournaments, and the whole atmosphere is great to watch all these kids come and play, and there’s a live relay of all the matches. It is not only a knockout tournament. It was played yesterday on a league basis. The kids have got a very good atmosphere to play in their own age groups, the under 14 age groups. To speak about the whole organization and the organizers behind this, the Hi 5 Youth Foundation, I have seen them grow from day one since I’m associated with basketball for over all these years, and they’ve done a great job with the underprivileged schools, underprivileged kids, to get them on court, to give them a direction in life. I’ve seen all these kids grow and they’ve gone to different levels. Some of those kids I’ve seen them coaching now. That is also why they’re going one step ahead. Like what they say, basketball is not only about learning the sports, it is changing lives. So great kudos to Hi 5. Congratulations to Hi 5 for doing such a wonderful job with the kids.”
Mr. Prakash Netam
Principal (Secondary Section), Motilal Nagar BMC School, Goregaon
“Today, their development is so good that the children who played with me are now coaches and running their own homes. For example, Rakesh & Mairaj, there are some children who developed very well, and those same children are teaching other children very well. I even hear sometimes that when a photo comes in, these students go to Chennai, Telangana, or somewhere else to make the finals. I really appreciate the fact that these children are from the poor and are doing so well. This organization is truly wonderful. They’re helping poor children in a truly remarkable way. Today, our school has organized quite a few events. This is truly wonderful. I just want every effort to ensure that their children benefit from the BMC.”
Ms. Vrushali Gosavi
Principal (Primary Section), Motilal Nagar BMC School, Goregaon
“I hope that this program will conclude in a great way and that this Hi 5 organization, which has made a lot of effort, will continue to rise and that my children will achieve great success in this and that they will always keep this banyan tree blooming and that my children will achieve all-round development in this.”
