In 2015, a group of 10-year-old boys from a municipal school in Goregaon—Rakesh, Mairaj, Raju, Ajit, Tasleem, and Saddam—stepped onto Hi 5’s basketball court with little more than curiosity and hope. Each came from a tough background, some battling poor influences, others burdened with responsibilities far beyond their age. But on the court, they found a level playing field—and soon, a sense of purpose.

They weren’t just talented—they were driven. Within three years, they began winning inter-school and district tournaments, turning heads across Mumbai. One key moment came

when a teammate skipped a match to help at his father’s vada pav stall. Coaches rushed to bring him back—because every player mattered. That day, they beat one of the city’s top private schools. And more importantly, they realized they belonged.

Of Friendship, Community and Team SpiritBehind the victories was a deeper transformation. Hi 5’s Pathways to Success program taught them discipline, English, life skills, and the value of teamwork. As they transitioned to junior college through sports quotas, they continued training—juggling classes, odd jobs, and family duties. But when financial stress threatened their possibility of studying further, Hi 5 stepped in again—this time with internships. They coached younger kids, helped at centers, earned stipends, and found meaning in mentoring others like themselves.

That’s when everything came full circle. Their passion, performance and commitment propelled them to secure full-time employment with Hi 5, currently training the best Under-13 team in Mumbai. They are more than just athletes—they are leaders. Rakesh, now a full-time coach, is bringing his entire community into the program. Tasleem runs the Pragati center with dedication. Mairaj, Ajit, Raju, and Saddam have all become full-time coaches with Hi 5, gaining access to better livelihoods. They truly embody what Hi 5 stands for: purpose, passion, and professionalism.

Their story isn’t just about basketball—it’s about breaking cycles, rewriting narratives, and lifting others as they rise. Now, with even bigger dreams, their eyes are set on launching a startup.
